Chapter 6. Consequential Sounds and Their Effect on Human Robot Interaction

Authors: Aimee Allen, Richard Savery and Nicole Robinson

Abstract: This chapter explains robot consequential sounds, and the resultant impact on human robot interaction. Consequential sounds are defined as unintentional sounds made by a robot in its use, such as motor noises. Different consequential sounds across a variety of robotic platforms are demonstrated, and the effect robot consequential sounds have on HRI are discussed, including techniques and implications when designing for consequential sounds in research or production soundscapes to improve human-robot interaction success.
